When I was 6 years old and living in Henryetta, Oklahoma, my Godfather was murdered for no other reason than being openly gay. The man who murdered him was given just a 20-year sentence. The reasoning was that the judge who presided over the case insisted that my Godfather was somehow deserving due to his sexual orientation and that society would be better off without him. But neither myself nor any of the people who loved him are better off, nor is anyone who knew him. And that single event is where my mission for Chicago Green Insulation began.
Providing More than Money: We Help Foster Pride and Hope
Chicago Green Insulation was born out of the idea that if you give people gainful employment, opportunities and hope, they will rise to the occasion. The inequities that we see on Chicago’s streets are due to entire generations not being given a chance to prosper and grow (and so many other factors!). Our business is not just about making money for everyone we employ. It is also about changing stigmas and helping some of the least fortunate individuals among us. We believe that happens through giving people a chance to find pride in a job well done. We believe that when you do this and you give people the best product and service available, you can change things for the better for so many.
In Chicago in 2016, 90 percent of the street violence was perpetrated by 6,000 18- to 25-year-olds who were unemployed.* Those 6000 young men are not my target, but the 600 or even those 6 who are ready, willing and able to get out and do something positive are my target. I believe that if we offer those young men an opportunity, some portion of them will grab that and not let go of the opportunity.
Opening Doors Through Foam
Some people ask me if my business suffers because I am willing to hire those who have been incarcerated, rehabilitated or have made mistakes in the past. My answer to them is that not only does my company not suffer because we are willing to extend a hand, but that it is the reason many of our customers hire us. They are highly skilled, and they have hope for the future, where once they had none.
The people whom we hire have had doors opened to them that they never expected. We recruit people who have made amends with their past and their past actions. They have paid their debt to society and are ready to become a productive member of that society now, not living on the outskirts looking in.
Our dream for the New Year is to bring prosperity for many who forgot how to dream for it, and to provide quality service to those customers who believe in us and a more forgiving and loving society. Do I think that things have changed since my Godfather lost his life? No, not nearly enough. But the good news is that hope is endless, and I believe that the goodness in people, if given the opportunity, will always shine through. I see it in our staff, and I see it in our clients. This holiday season, let me just say how thankful we are for all of you.
